Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions I get asked. Please get in touch if you don't find what you are looking for.

Who is this practice for? Anyone with a body can take part in a conscious dance class. All ages are welcome although children tend to get bored if it's a full two hour session. It's usually quite active with between 1-2 hours of moving but as you move at your own pace, it's suitable for all levels of fitness. You don't need any experience or ability as there is no right or wrong way to move, no steps to follow.

I'm not a dancer! In western culture dancing can carry a lot of judgement. Forget what you think you know about dance and instead, think about intuitive movement as a birthright. You were born wanting to move and your body knows this, let the body take the lead.

Is Conscious Dance a therapy? Please be aware that I am not a phycologist or therapist and simply offer a space and embodied practice where we can find our own healing through the body. It's important to make me aware of any physical or mental health concerns, should you access anything that requires professional help I would encourage you to seek it.

What should I wear? Wear whatever you like as long as it's comfortable and you can move in it. Layers work best because you can adjust what you're wearing if you feel hot or cold. Soft shoes like trainers or dance shoes can be worn, barefoot is recommended but sometimes not practical depending on the venue.

What should I bring? A water bottle is essential. There's usually a fee per session but concessions are available if money is tight. I ask you turn any devices off during our time together.

What will we do? We will move freely and as a group to a wide variety of music including world, electronic and ambient. The music will invite you into different rhythms and patterns of movement. Through bringing awareness to our bodies we will explore the direct experience of this moment and what is arising in us.
